Tatyana Surnenkova: Snoring is a sound phenomenon that occurs during sleep when air passes through narrowed airways. Normally, a person does not snore. Snoring is caused by smoking, obesity, weakness of the muscles of the soft palate, curvature of the nasal septum, the structure of the facial skeleton, in particular, a small lower jaw, alcohol abuse and certain sleeping pills.


Snoring is most common when you are supine. The muscular tissues of the opopharynx relax during sleep, plus the tongue is displaced back, all this leads to a narrowing of the airways and the occurrence of the phenomenon of snoring. In this case, it is enough to train yourself to sleep on your side using special positional trackers or a regular ball sewn into a T-shirt pocket at shoulder blades.

- And what other techniques, "tricks" are there?

TS: If your snoring is caused by a runny nose or allergic rhinitis, snoring sprays may have some effect. In this case, sprays and drops with glucocorticosteroids are prescribed. There are remedies that, to some extent, increase the tone of the muscles of the palate and pharynx. But they are ineffective for snoring from other causes.

- What can cause snoring?

TS: Obesity is one of the main causes of snoring. Therefore, malnutrition is one of the main reasons for its occurrence. In addition, snoring is exacerbated by alcohol. It is recommended to exclude the use of alcoholic beverages 2 hours before bedtime. If we talk about anatomically determined reasons (curvature of the nasal septum, excess soft tissues of the palate, enlarged tonsils, etc.), then the doctor will help here. But you can also use a number of tests yourself to figure out where your snoring is coming from:
